Let's take it back to 1997 the era of Junior Mafia with Lil'Kim as their frontier front lady the group met as childhood friends of The Notorious B.I.G. All the members were under the age of twenty when the group was formed. The group was composed of three separate groups and two individual artists. The 6s, or 666, (Lil' Caesar, Bugsy, Capone, Chico, and Nino Brown) who claim to know right from wrong and practice it; the Sixes knew Biggie before he was rapping (the other members other than Lil' Kim were added on to the group but still were very close to Biggie). The Snakes (cousins Larceny and Trife) who represent the enraged attitude expressed in a large number of America’s youth, MC Klepto, who offered insight on a life of “boostin' and hustlin'”, and Lil' Kim, (a.k.a Big Momma or The Lieutenant), the only female in the group, who showed the ghetto life from a woman’s point of view. The Notorious B.I.G. acted as the "godfather" to the group.Lil' Kim continued her rise and went on to become a successful artist in her own right, releasing four albums as a solo artist. The M.A.F.I.A. were referenced on her debut album, Hard Core, on the song "M.A.F.I.A. Land" and featured on "Fuck You". Kim collaborated with Lil' Cease on her single "Crush On You (Remix)". Lil' Cease's solo effort The Wonderful World of Cease A Leo was released in 1999 peaked at #26 on the Billboard 200. The lead single, "Play Around", featured Bristal, Lil' Kim and Puff Daddy and peaked at #9 on the Billboard Hot Rap Singles chart.
Today we have a similar clan by the name of Young Money which consists of Lil Wayne Drake Mack Maine Nicki Minaj, Tyga, Gudda Gudda, Jae Millz, Lil Chuckee ,Lil Twist, T-Streets,Short Dawg, Cory Gunz ,Shanell aka SnL. The label has released four #1 albums by Lil Wayne, Drake and Nicki Minaj who has claimed her place as the female leader of the crew. Similar to Kim coming from New York but yet I see Nicki as being more lady-like, no diss to Kim, but Nicki's raps just don't consists of vulgarity and sexual inuendos. Now I place Wayne in Biggie's spot and Baby would be the Diddy of the empire, and Drake would be your modern day lil cease if you really think about it. Its all just a new cycle with the people our age taking over where the generation before us left off.
We could have Keyshia Cole as a modern day Mary J Blige because of the pain and struggle she has been through which comes out and you feel it when you listen to her music. They both have worked with Puff so I feel it's a great way of history in the hip-hop culture to kind of have it's new edge but keep the same similarities we grew up with. Everybody is so quick to say this person is copying that persons swag, I mean everyone has someone they admire and that is actual form of flattery more so than a slap in the face. Toni Braxton even gives you modern-day Anita Baker nobody can copy there sounds, but there is always gonna be that new it person.
