Long before Beverly, Iman, Naomi, and Tyra this Detroit born beauty paved the way for many supermodels and actresses of color. She was born with the name Peggy Ann Freeman and attended Cass Technical High School, a school which I became familiar with because so many of those I attended undergrad with had gone there. Luna's mother desired that she pursue a career in nursing, but that wasn't Luna's dream she longed for the spotlight.
Discovered by photographer David McCabe she uprooted from the Detroit and made her way to New York to pursue her calling a a supermodel. Luna was the first African American to appear on the cover of Vogue, the year before she had appeared on the cover of Harper's Bazaar, she was praised by Time magazine in their April 1966 issue calling it "The Luna Year". She did several projects with the famed Andy Warhol in the 60's before her untimely death at age 33 in Rome, Italy.
