The masses might remember Jarvis as the young guy with long hair, riding his bike while singing the feel good summer-tune titled "radio", it was so catchy, you couldn't turn your tv on without seeing his video in constant rotation. The Tulsa, OK native started singing at the young age of 4 in his church choir stemming from his deep religious roots, and strict bible-belt upbringing. This also limited the type of music he was exposed to, and gradually he began becoming influenced by such artists as James Brown and Usher. At the age of 13 life as he knew it transformed, relocating to Atlanta and being signed to Jermaine Dupri's SoSo Def Records which swept him into a world of stardom beyond his wildest dreams. Jarvis was traveling and performing under a label which once housed such acts as Xscape, Bow Wow, and a host of others had become his reality.
That reality soon turned into a musicians worse nightmare, Jermaine had other business ventures in mind for SoSo Def which were set on Virgin Records. However this left every artist signed to SoSo Def without a label, including Jarvis who at the time couldn't grasp what was going on. As a teenager he wasn't quite as business savvy, and he felt as if his whole world had stopped, had it not been for his strong family foundation, along with the support of his team and fans that would've been it for him. Being the tenacious person that he is Jarvis bravely went back into the studio, exploring new sounds and building on life experience that now provided him with more things to write about. Jarvis states"that he never took the situation with Jermaine Dupri personal, and it was honestly the nature of the business". Jarvis used that part of his life as a learning experience, staying focused and having extreme love for his fan Jarvis has relaunched his career under the management of Kadife Sylvester at Def Jam records with a new EP titled"heartache". Jarvis wants a chance to reach new fans, and keep an ongoing connection with previous one's.
For the new fan base he wants them to know that he didn't just come out of the woodwork, or to mistake him for some overnight success, but that he has worked hard to get to the point of where he is now. Jarvis describes the evolution of his music to the likeness of a young Usher Raymond, now 23 years old, his music reflects his fun loving spirit, love of the single life, and women this new energy has made him evolve in everyway possible making his music 100 times better. On "Heartache" Jarvis was careful not to have a host of features because the focus was on what he has gone through with life, but there are a few which are "Wait til You See Me" ft Lil Scrappy, "Copping the Best"ft Waka Flocka, and "Pretty Girl" ft Ludacris. Jarvis would like to dabble in film & television having spent some time in Los Angeles working with different acting coaches, still citing his main focus as his music and leaving the impression in the world of"having put in work from day one, staying true to himself as well as his fans, that following your dreams and never giving up will make you come out on top, and also knowing that every artist doesn't have the same role in the music industry meaning that what works for someone else will not necessarily work for you".
In the spirit of fashion week being everywhere this month, I engaged Jarvis in a conversation about his own personal style. Jarvis loves Michael Kors watches, Balenciaga is his favorite designer, he doesn't like suits very much, he says that "with a good physique, fly pair of sneakers, blazer, paired with hot accessories, and you can conquer the world" Jarvis emphasizes the importance of physique as his mantra.
