The nerd
Michelle Pfieffer's character's is so socially awkward that her resolution last year was "to make more eye-contact!" She's also clumsy, and when she tries to quit her job she ends up fetching her boss coffee. Michelle Pfieffer is still comically attractive, and we kept thinking about how life must have been hard for Elvira in the witness protection program. It's also cool that Aspergers or underlying social anxiety can immediately be cured by Zack Efron taking you to a spa and suspending you on some wires like Peter Pan.
The Saint
Halle Berry spends the vast majority of this movie clutching a dying man's hand and whispering soothing things while he mistakes her for his daughter. Twist: later in the movie, she proceeds to be more saintly!
The Whore
We are introduced to Ava as she inexplicably jumps up and down in front of a camera while the photographer exclaims "yes, bouncy, bouncy, bouncy, you are so sexy!" She is a sous chef, so that was not her job and "why that was a good idea" is never really explained. Maybe it's just fun. Maybe that. She shows her range later with lines like, when someone says "I play the drums" purring "I just play." Wait! No, that's not right. That's not what range is.
The Workaholic
Nothing says likable like a woman with perfectly placed hair shouting "don't just drop the confetti! Float them! It's supposed to be magical!" Hilary Swank is pretty good at this whole 'acting' thing.
The Virgin
All she wants is to be kissed! She doesn't even know how to kiss! But she knows she wants to! Fortunately, there is a youtube video that will show her how. Arent we so glad we did not come of age right now?
The Crone
She does not want her daughter to get kissed! She wants them to sit on the couch together and watch the ball drop on television. She also invites Rockettes (she's a costume designer) to do the same. Her daughter explains to her that this is because she has no man in her life and she is pathetic.
The Scorned Woman
Her fiance got cold feet and then - seemingly immediately - regretted it and called and wrote and sent concert tickets. When she sees him again she responds by slapping him multiple times and throwing eggs at a picture of him. This doesn't really seem like how most people would respond to this situation because, you know, he'd been sorry and regretful for an entire year.
The Ingenue
All she wants is to see her name in lights! She's just a small town girl with big dreams! I am fairly certain she wandered off the set of Ziegfield Girl (1941) and into this movie, except that Judy Garland was a lot more appealing, so, in that way, she is original.
