I recently got a chance to chop it up with the brillant mind of Olympic Trackstar David Oliver. David is originally from from Denver, CO and went on to graduate from Howard University in Washington DC. "Track was never my only interest as far as sports. It was actually the last sport I picked up. I started playing basketball when I was in Elementary school, played baseball and football was my love. I played football in college as well. " That's wassup so that is basically what you could call ALL-AMERICAN!!!
David on dedication and requirements for his field
"The type of dedication it takes to be great in my field is the same dedication it takes to be successful in any walk of life. It doesn't change whether you're an Olympic athlete or the CEO of a Fortune 500 company. It takes extreme focus and the ability to forward think because a lot of things will not manifest themselves in the short term. Goal setting is also of great importance. I set goals often, short term and long term goals. It takes a very strong mental make up to be successful as well.
I've had to make great sacrifices to get to this point. Relationships, friendships, social life etc. Everything I accomplish has come with some sort of struggle, but I have no problem with sacrificing in the short term to make sure I am fine in the long run. I figure that if I live to be 100 years old and say I am a professional athlete for 13 years, that's a very small percentage of my life, but in those 13 years, I can set myself up for a lifetime. It's a pretty simple decision to make the sacrifices necessary when I look at it that way." David is on team success and driven which what it takes to get to the high accolades he has accomplished in life.
David draws his inspiration fromall angels and aspects of life. "First and foremost, my mother is my biggest inspiration. She was the only role model I looked up to when I was younger. She directly taught me how to be a hard worker and the principle that if you want something, you've got to go get it because no one is going to give you anything. I also like watching greatness in action, whether it's watching a Raphael Nadal v Roger Federer tennis match or Floyd Mayweather work masterfully in the ring, I believe that in order to be great, you've got to observe greatness in some form. "
David speaks on his many impressive accomplishments
"I have so many accomplishments that are of importance to me, but I think the most important one is winning the 2010 Jesse Owens award as male track athlete of the year. It such a select group of all time greats that have won this award and being able to put my name up there means everything to me. The records I have, they can be broken, every event in the sport has gold, silver and bronze medals, there were about 30 Diamond League winners, but only one person per year can win that award." Now that is some inspiration for that masses, keep up the good work brother.I have endorsement deals with Nike and Rival-Us supplement company. Currently in talks with a couple more sponsors as well..."
As an athlete David states that he feels that it is very important for him to give back to his community,"I have a track camp I put on every year in my hometown and give my services and knowledge to several coaches clinics. I donate gear to several different organizations as well. My team and I are working on a track meet we will work with for kids in the DC area in May as well. I think being involved in the community gives people the opportunity to see a positive role model and an individual that accomplishes things that the younger generation can strive to accomplish."
David on speaks on his future goals
"Well of course the main objective is to win the gold medal at the World Championships this summer in Dageu, South Korea. I also want to improve on my performances and win the Jesse Owens award again next year. "
When David is not busy being an Olympic, Jesse Owens winning track star you can catch him doing the following. "Nothing at all! Laying on my couch, watching TV and on the internet occupies my time. Of course eating and sleeping as well!" LOL
Artist David is currently feeling right now
"I'm feeling J. Cole right now, been on him since I heard "The Warm Up" back in '09. At the time when it came out, I was injured with a torn calf but his songs like "Dollar and a Dream II", "Grown Simba" and "Hold It Down" kept me motivated. I also feel his "Friday Night Lights" mixtape was the best album of 2010"
David describes his personal style
"I don't really have a style, I'm a basic jeans and shirt kind of guy. All my jeans are Levis 501's, I mean they fit perfectly and only cost 40 bucks, I've got every color of those. I do drop chips on my shoes though, I've got around eleven pairs of Gucci and Louis Vuitton sneakers, so I'll usually be wearing a pair of those around with some 501's and maybe a v neck tee or Ralph Lauren Polo shirt, all depends. But believe I clean up well and have an array of tailor made suits and shirts." The V-necks 501's, and Polo's I dig that very dope!!!
Best Place to hangout in your city
"I don't really do any hanging out, generally too tired from practice, but if I go somewhere around Orlando, it's generally to the Mall of Mellinia. I can go shop and eat at some nice restaurants and I always run in to somebody I know out there."You will catch David drinking nothing but water, "Always cups filled up with the clear stuff around the house."
